It is commonly used as artificial flavoring such as pineapple flavoring in alcoholic beverages (e.g. martinis, daiquiris etc), as a solvent in perfumery products, and as a plasticizer for cellulose. In addition, Ethyl butyrate is often also added to orange juice, as most associate its odor with that of fresh orange juice.

pentyl butanoate , is an ester that is formed when pentanol is reacted with butyric acid,[1] usually in the presence of sulfuric acid as a catalyst. This ester has a smell reminiscent of pear or apricot. This chemical is used as an additive in cigarettes.

Methyl butanoate, also known under the systematic name methyl butanoate, is the methyl ester of butyric acid. Like most esters, it has a fruity odour, in this case resembling apples or pineapples. At room temperature, it is a colourless liquid with low solubility in water, upon which it floats to form an oily layer. Although it is flammable, it has a relatively low vapour pressure (40mm Hg at 30OC), so it can be safely handled at room temperature without special safety precautions.
